தலைவா! தலைவா! எண்டு ஒரு படம் பார்க்க போனமா! அது நம்ம தளபதி நடிச்ச படமாம்! தடை எல்லாம் பண்ணி இருக்காங்களாம்! அப்போ விஸ்வரூபம் போல ஏதாச்சும் (?) இருக்கும் எண்டு போனா…… இனி வருவீயா? மாட்டியா ? என்ற மாதிரி போட்டாங்க பாஸ் படத்த….

படம் ஆரம்பிக்கும் போதே, மணிரத்னத்திற்கு சேர்த்து ஒரு ஆறு – ஏழு பேருக்கு நன்றி போட்டாங்க! அப்பவே, நாயகன் + நாயகன் பார்ட் 2 கமல் படத்தில வருவார் எண்டு தெரிஞ்சுக்கணும்! மிஸ் பண்ணிட்டம். அப்படியே எழுத்தோட்டம் எல்லாம் முடிஞ்சு படம் ஆரம்பிச்சுது 1988 ம் ஆண்டுக்கு கூட்டி போனாங்க! பிளாஷ்பேக் இல்லாத தமிழ் சினிமாவும், ட்விட்டர் இல்லாத பசங்களும் வாழ்ந்ததா சரித்திரம் இருக்குதா என்ன? அத அப்படியே போலோ பண்ணினா அதுல சத்தியராஜ் கறுப்பு டோப்பா போட்டு கொண்டு சண்டை பிடிச்சுட்டு இருந்தாரு! (இளமையாம்) அப்படியே ஒரு பஞ்ச் வசனம் பேசி, வில்லனை கொண்டு தாதா ஆகி, அது மகனுக்கு தெரியக்கூடாது எண்டு அவன ஆஸ்திரேலியாவுக்கு அனுப்பிட்ட்டாரு! இந்த ஒரு வரி கதை முடிவில தலைவன் கார்டு போட்டாங்க! எழும்பி போயிருக்கணும்! மிஸ் பண்ணிட்டன்.

இப்போ, 2000யிரத்துல ஏதோ ஒரு ஆண்டு, தளபதி ஆஸ்திரேலியாவில வியாபாரம் + நடனம் ஆடிக்கிட்டு இருக்காரு! இடையில அமலாபால பாக்கிறாரு ;லவ்ல விழுகிறாரு! சேம் டைம் நம்ம ரியல் ஹீரோ சந்தானம் என்ட்ரி ஆகி, அவரும் அமலாபால காதலிக்கிறாரு! இங்கதான் நம்ம இயக்குனர் விஜய் நமக்கு வைக்கிறார் ட்விஸ்ட்டு! அதாகப்பட்டது. அமலாபால் நம்ம 100% ரியல் ஹீரோ சாம் ஆண்டர்சனை திருமணம் செய்த செய்திதான் அது! இந்த ட்விஸ்ட்டு பொய் எண்டு தெரிஞ்சாலும், காமடி போர்ஷன் எண்டு சொல்லி நாமளே சிரிசுக்கணும்.

 

அப்புறம், சந்தானத்தை வச்சு , விஜய் தன்னை தானே காமடி பண்ணி, தானும் “தல” போல எண்டு காட்டிக்கிறாரு. ஸப்பா! இதுல கதை எங்கே எண்டு கேட்க வாயை திறக்கும் போது, அமலாபால் அப்பா சுரேஷ் உருவத்தில ஒரு ட்விஸ்ட். அதாகப்பட்டது, அமலாபாலும் நம்ம விஜயை லவ்வ ரெண்டு பேருக்கும் கல்யாணம் கட்டி வைக்கணும் என்றதுக்காக பொண்ணோட அப்பா சுரேஷ் பையனோட அப்ப சத்தியராஜ்ஜ பார்க்க இந்தியா போகணும் எண்டு சொல்லுறாரு! பொண்ண பெத்த அப்ப எண்டா கேள்வி கேக்கிறதும், பையன பெத்த அப்பா மூடிக்கிட்டு பதில் சொல்லுறதும் தமிழ் சினிமா வழக்கம்தானே! இந்த இடத்திலதான் மறுபடியும் நம்ம இயக்குனர் ட்விஸ்ட் வைக்கிறாரு!  உண்மையிலேயே, இது நல்ல ட்விஸ்ட்டு, இதையாவது படம் பாக்கிற சாக்கில போய் பாருங்க எல்லோரும்! ட்விஸ்ட் முடியும் போது, இடைவேளை போட்டாங்க!

இடைவேளை முடிஞ்சா! நம்ம தளபதி தாதா ஆகிட்டாரு! வெள்ளை சேர்ட் , அத இன் பண்ணி ஒரு நீல டெனிம் போட்டா நீங்களும் ஒரு நவீன தாதா! அந்த டைம் வை,ஜி, மகேந்திரன் (அவராத்தான் இருக்கும்) வந்து, தலைவன் என்கிறது நம்மள தேடி வாற விஷயம் எண்டு பஞ்ச் பேசி நம்ம தளபதியை உசுபேத்தி விடுறாரு ! இதுக்கு பிறகு நாம தலைவா படத்துக்கு வந்து இருக்கோமா ? இல்லை வேட்டைக்காரன் படத்துக்கு வந்து இருக்கோமா? எண்டு நம்ம்ளுக்கே கான்பியூஸ்! இதில வேற, அடிக்கடி துப்பாக்கி BGM போட்டு ஜி.வி.பிரகாஷ் வேற கான்பியூஸ் பண்ணிகிட்டு!

இதை எல்லாம் தாண்டி வந்தா, நம்ம தளபதி தாதா ஆன பிறகு, முகத்த உர் உர் எண்டு வச்சுகிட்டு தான் ஒரு மரண மாஸ் தாதா என்று ட்ரை பன்னுறாராம். தளபதி அது சிலருக்குத்தான் வரும்! லூஸ்ல விடுங்க அப்படின்னு சொல்ல வாய் வரும்போது, பாட்சா படத்துலயிருந்து ஒரு சீன உருவி போட்டு சீனை நிரப்பி, அடுத்த சீனுக்கு  போய்ட்டாங்க!

 

அடப்போங்கப்பா! இதுக்கே நான் டைர்ட் ஆகிட்டேன்! இனி வில்லனை கொல்லனும், கிளைமாக்ஸ்ல சண்டை பிடிக்கணும் ! அதுல, வேற கூட்டமா இருக்கிற வில்லனை பிடிக்க அந்த பொலிஸ் பொண்ணு தனியா போகணும்! கடைசியில, தளபதி தாடி வச்சு கெட்டப் மாத்திட்டாரு எண்டு காட்டனும்! இப்படி எவ்வளவோ இருக்குதே!

Kamal has always been stunning the audience with his over flowing variety of whimsical expressions and make overs.
 

In the present days, where movie making is driven by technology and computer graphics, creating an abnormal character can be easy. Kamal has indeed made such notable appearances with the help of computer graphics.
 

But who can forget ‘Appu’ in Apoorva Sagodarargal? The movie, which was released in the year 1989, was a mind-boggling visual treat. Having been released in an era that did not have computer graphics, the secret behind the making of the Appu character still remains a mystery.
 

However, P.C Sriram, the cinematographer of the movie, gave a few hints about the secret behind it, in a recent interview.
 

‘Kamal acted with folded legs in some of the scenes. In the other scenes that portrayed Appu we had to do a few camera tricks. We placed Kamal in one end of the frame and filled the other areas with attractive circus materials. This ‘shift of attention’ trick made the audience overlook some of Kamal’s movements.
 

Kamal struggled a lot to apply this trick in every frame. The making of this film itself can be written as a book. Today the audiences watch movies very closely. If you freeze some of the frames of Apoorva Sagodarargal, you can find out some of the camera tricks easily.
 

But the fact that Kamal managed to do it at that age, where there was absolutely no technology, is simply amazing.’

There was a time when Telugu movies used to be dubbed or remade in Tamil. Nowadays the trend is towards making bilingual movies, where the Tamil and Telugu versions are shot separately . This gives producers room to tweak some parts to suit the taste of Tamil film- goer. Clearly, this is a win-win formula, and producer Lakshmi Manchu, daughter of iconic actor Mohan Babu, has done just that with Maranthen Mannithen, the bilingual movie which has released big this week. The Telugu version, Gundello Godari released a little earlier. 

 The film begins very interestingly, with Chitra (Lakshmi Manchu) traveling by train for her wedding. This is the 1980s', when many states in the country are experiencing heavy rains and flooding. However, in a small fishing hamlet in the district of Rajamundhry on the banks of the Godavari, the villagers are busy organizing a grand feast for the marriage of Malli (Aadhi), a happy-go-lucky fisherman and Lakshmi Manchu . While everyone including the priest is happy, Malli and Chitra look a bit uncomfortable when the mangalsutraI is tied. Just as you are wondering why the newly weds look so glum, the mystery deepens when a grandly dressed Sarala (Taapsee Pannu ), arrives at the marriage venue, and with a sultry smile gifts a gold ring to the groom. Malli takes it, looking as though he were handling a snake. 

 Even as a buzz goes up among the guests about her visit, a grinning Senthil swaggers up to the pandal and gifts a gold chain to the bride. Before the crowd can react, the bunds of the river break and everyone rushes out to move their cattle, their belongings and their families to a higher ground. Except the newlyweds, who appear shell shocked .

 However, the rushing waters forces them to come out of their apathy, and as Malli and Chitra find themselves marooned on a hay stack, they slowly begin to talk to each other. Not sure if they will come out of the monsoon's fury alive, Malli tells her about how Sarala impacted his life. Daughter of a rich man, who also owns the boat that Malli uses for fishing, Sarala forces Malli to take her out to movies and spend time with her. When her father hears rumours about their relationship, he foists an illegal toddy brewing case on Malli. When he comes out of jail, an angry Malli wants to confront Sarala's father, but he is away from home. Instead, Sarala seduces him, and Malli's dream of buying his own boat remain just that-a dream. Chitra then tells Malli her life story, of how three men intersected in her life, playing havoc. Halfway through her story, the deluge becomes worse, and both of them are swept into the water. Malli manages to get on to a bridge, and he sees Chitra floating far away.

 Does she survive? Does she live to tell her tale of sufferings and how she overcame them? Do the newlyweds live happily ever after? You have to watch the movie to find out. Aadhi, Lakshmi Manchu and Taapsee have pulled in natural performances.

 Manchu's huge eyes are a big plus and she makes excellent use of them to convey anger, sorrow, distress and laughter. As a mischievous and thoughtless rich girl, Taapsee is a breeze to watch, while Aadhi is the very epitome of a young , guileless but self respecting fisherman.

 Sundeep Kishan as Suri, one of the three men in Chitra's life does not have to sweat much in a role tailor made for him. Maestro Ilayaraja has scored the music and as always is a treat. The song, Gudhikudhamma (lyrics by Muthulingam) is a signature Raja Sir song and an honest tribute to the fishing community. The rebooting of old Raja number Rathiri nerathu did not work as well as the original for me, but on the whole the songs and the background score gel with the story beautifully. Kumar Nagendra has done a good job as director, and there is hardly any lag in the screenplay. Nowhere does the film have a 'telugu' look, which is not a mean achievement when you are shooting a bilingual.

 MR Palanikumar's camera work adds strength to a story line which is not linear, but does not lose out on compelling narration.

A little bit of romance, action, comedy, suspense and few heroic moments make a good entertaining film of standards that can attract audiences from all categories. 

Debutant Kinslin's slick crime thriller with distinct story-line and a strong narrative is becoming a truly commercial entertainer for the masses.

Debutant Kinslin's slick crime thriller with ignorable cliches passes with distinction in becoming a truly commercial entertainer for the masses. What works in the favour of the film, despite stiff criticism from the elite class audiences, is the offbeat presentation of a simple story.

Sakthi (Dileepan), a share auto driver, likes to go out of his way to help strangers without any hidden agenda. Over the course of time, his helping tendency only grows stronger to the level where he confronts injustice and in turn earns the ire of three baddies.

Cut to his routine life he is madly in love with Leena (Anjali), who likes to receive all attention, but wouldn't reciprocate. As he tries desperately like any sane lover would do to impress her, the film shifts gears and introduces a series of events that would propel Sakthi into combat and self-protection mode.

With three baddies after his life, how does Sakthi save himself from the clutches of death? This forms the rest of the story.

The film kicks off convincingly with a pinch of suspense quite early on in the narrative. Three characters expressing their misfortune and pointing fingers at the same person, who they aspire to kill. What I really loved in this film is the fact that the script is not written keeping in mind a hero and three villains.

The director very intelligently allows a series of events to let the character pit against each other allowing a revenge sort of story to develop.

One of the common criticisms was that the story needed a familiar face instead of Dileepan. I beg to differ by saying that it's a story about a common man rising against anti-social activities.

We can't expect a common man to be Shah Rukh Khan or Aamir Khan, can we?

Dileepan was apt for the role and he pulled off some adrenaline pumping action sequences, while struggling at the same time in the romantic portions.

While the first half of the film is short and crisp, the second half is where the film loses a grip on the narrative and starts pushing viewers into boredom. It's tough to highlight which part can be chopped off in the second half as most of it appeared necessary.

The climax was engaging despite its extended running time, one couldn't ignore few shortcomings.

In the acting department, we have mixed performances from a bevy of known actors such as Sampath and Jayaprakash. Jagan may have looked weak as the insurance agent turned bad guy, but his character is akin to several stories we read in the papers every day.

Kinslin deserves some appreciation for churning out characters that are plausible.

Anjali needs to pull up her socks and start demanding different roles because she is starting to get repetitive despite her talent.

Cinematography by Gurudev is not extraordinary, but good in few action sequences. It is best experienced when seen on screen, than explained.

Ghibran's music, especially the background score, elevates the movie a notch. However, little would anybody have noticed that the background score in the climax atop a mountain, is reminiscent to music from 'Pirates of the Caribbean'.

Stunts by Rajasekhar definitely deserves a loud applause for he makes it an engaging action flick at regular intervals.

With occasional speed breakers, 'Vathikuchi' is entertaining.

‘Paradesi’ is based on real life incidents that took place before independence during the 1940s. Paradesi is inspired from a novel called 'Eriyum Panikadu' (translation of Red Tea). The film delves into the wretched lives of tea plantation workers. The movie realistically depicts the lives of poor carefree villagers who are lured to work in tea plantation farms and how they are forced to live rest of their lives as slaves with no trace of hope and freedom.

Bala's unadulterated cinematic vision

Bala is always known for handling strikingly different themes and capturing human emotions brilliantly on screen. He does it again this time with no commercial compromises whatsoever. After the disappointing Avan Ivan, this is exactly what the Bala fans would have expected from the master story teller. Bala will completely satisfy his loyal fan base. But, it will prove to be a challenge for rest of the general audience who seek non-stop entertainment in the form of comedy, which is now in vogue.

The opening shot is striking as the camera traverses freely through the village houses where one can feel a sense of freedom. The final shot is constructed in a similar manner but conveying an entirely different vision of distress and helplessness. The movie is filled with such excellent visual story-telling throughout. One such example is a long line of people migrating from the village to tea estate, especially the scene showing snaking long line of villagers drinking water from a pond. Similarly, the wedding scenes in a poor village during pre-independence era is realistically and interestingly constructed.

Calibrate your expectations and mindset

Please don't go in with the expectation that a movie should start and end a certain way. This is Bala's movie. The story begins in a straightforward manner and there is no clue of where the journey may lead. Just let the master take you through his haunting visions of slavery in our history. Having preconceived notions will work against your movie watching experience.

Secondly, it may be interesting to watch the movie as a detached observer witnessing how dreams are stolen from poor & guileless people by selfish individuals in power. The movie is probably the most genuine portrayal of slavery in Indian cinema. In this regard, Bala doesn't differentiate between imperialistic rulers or Indian supervisors working for the Britishers or christian missionary doctors who are all shown to have the same purpose with different execution methods of ruling the slaves.

Casts have lived the characters

Atharva, Dhansika and Vedhika have lived the characters. Atharva's big expressive eyes help bring out varied emotions. Dhansika has given a measured performance by bringing out subtle reactions. Vedhika's characterization is quite the contrary to Dhansika's. Vedhika is seen as a bubbly prankster who brings some relief to the proceedings during the pre-interval portions. Most of the other characters are not known faces. Casting of these character are so unique, yet so real, making a lasting impression.

Music and technical departments serve as the backbone

GV Prakash's music appropriately brings out the right emotions and BGM seamlessly blends with the scenes even though the sounds may not exactly suit the 1940s. Camera work is smooth and serves as the viewfinder for director's vision. The parched tone lends itself well to the theme and matches the time period in which the movie is set. The editing supports the smooth flow of the story with no gimmicks to manipulate the pace. The art direction, costumes, set properties and make-up departments are excellent in bringing to life a slice of time period in history.

Creative Fulfillment over Box Office Outcomes!

Chances at the box office may be uphill. Bala doesn't artificially sprinkle the narration with melodrama, cinematic romance, triumph of good over bad, power of hope and uprising, revenge-seeking action nor clapworthy dialogues. Bala could've easily done a few compromises here and there to make it a commercial appealing movie which he has also successfully done it in the past. But, looks like the master was just not in the mood to do so this time.

The story, concept and emotions portrayed are universal and applies to any time period in history or even future. Bala and his team totally deserve to sweep a number of national and global awards this year. Paradesi will be unanimously praised by film-makers and critics for the boldness and obsession of Bala's uncompromised vision. No doubt, Paradesi will be a landmark film for director Bala and Tamil cinema.

Director AMR Ramesh's latest venture Vanayudham has created lot of positive buzz prior its release especially for the story of forest brigand Veerappan and Rajkumar's kidnap. Film goers have lot of expectations and the movie does not let them down. The director's cinematic presentation, which is coupled with Kishore's wonderful performance, is sure to leave you spell bound.

Vanayudham is action drama based on the life of Veerappan. Kishore's superb acting is the main attraction in the film. AMR Ramesh's story, screenplay and dialogues, Sandeep Chowta's music, Vijay Milton's picturisation, beautiful art direction and costumes are its other highlights.

The movie shows AMR Ramesh has done extensive research and lot of homework on Veerappan's life before starting this project. That's why Attahasa looks like a documentary of the forest brigand. He has created a beautiful screenplay and shot the entire film in the forest, where Veerappan was doing his smuggling operations when he was alive.

The movie begins with the story of Veerappan's childhood days and it ends with his death covering all important milestone in his life (Januaray 18, 1952 to October 18, 2004). Lot has earlier been written and shown on TV about his activities. But what makes this movie so special and interesting is AMR's presentation of the subject on screen, which is brilliant.

The first half of Vanayudham throws light on Veerappan's alleged killing of elephants and illegal smuggling of ivory and sandalwood. The second half features Rajkumar's kidnap and Karnataka Government's attempt to get him released and nab the forest brigand. The show runs without boring you and AMR Ramesh does it san commercial elements. He has good grip on the narration of the story.

Vanayudham has superb performance by lead actors and rich production values. Polladhavan fame Kishore has done wonderful acting and it will be not exaggeration if it is described as his lifetime performance. He has got into the character of Veerapan. His makeup, body language and diction are simply superb.

As DGP Vijaykumar, Arjun Sarja also impresses you. Ravi Kale has also given good performance. But Lakshmi Rai has very less scope in the film and viewers can hardly feel her presence on screen. Bollywood actor Suresh Oberoi has played late actor Dr. Rajkumar and he has delivered wonderful performance. His appeance on-screens teases the memory of the fans of Annavru.

Others like Vijayalakshmi, Jayachitra, Sulakshana, Shikha, Yogi Devaraj, Suma Guha have also delivered brilliant performance.

Sandeep Chowta's music is the main attraction in the technical front and his background score highten intensity of many scenes. Vijay Milton's cinematography offers you a visual treat. He has done wonderful picturisation of forest. Anthony's editing is also commendable.

Overall, Vanayudham is brilliant effort by AMR Ramesh, who rocks you without any masala ingredients. It is a must watch movie.
